Perhaps the best way to sum up Giclee Printing and the Giclee process is to describe it as Digital Fine art. The term ‘digital printing’ carries with it a cheaper, low quality, sub standard connotation, hence a new more desirable phrase was coined for a high quality fine art digital print – the Giclee Print was born.
Epson 9800 Giclee Printer
This is not to say that this phrase is all smoke and mirrors. Giclee Printing denotes an elevation in printmaking technology, arguably creating the most accurate reproduction of an original work of art available today.
The word Giclée to give it its correct spelling may have been derived from the French verb “gicler” meaning “to squirt”. This is what the inks do when they coat the paper or canvas with pigment.
A giclee print can be generated from many different types of images. They can be original digitally created art works, high-resolution digital scans or photographs.
Once the image is ready, it can be printed with archival quality inks onto various medias including giclee canvas, fine art giclee paper, and giclee photo paper.
One of our resident art experts, Will, has recently written a detailed article all about the photo to canvas service on the web. His article can be seen here in full:

More and more people now have the capacity to create their own art from their digital photographs. What was once a specialised field, has been thrown open to every man and his dog – all you need is to own a digital camera, or in many cases, just a phone with a built in camera! One of the most popular usages of digital photographs is blowing an image up and printing it on canvas.

A detailed article can be found on this very subject here. They go into great detail on the technology and the processes involved in transferring a photo to canvas. Giclee Printing is the most common print process for this task nowadays and really offers the best results in both clarity and longevity.
The term “giclée print” denotes an elevation in printmaking technology. Images can be generated from many different methods. They can be original digitally created art works using computer software, high resolution digital scans or photographic capturing. Once the image is ready, it is printed with archival quality inks onto various medias including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclée printing process provides better colour accuracy than any other means of reproduction.
Giclée prints are created typically using professional ink-jet printers. These printers are capable of producing incredibly detailed prints for both the fine art and photographic markets.
